Wordpress 2.3 – Plugin Update Notification Makes Security Updates Easy

Wordpress 2.3 Update If you have not updated to the latest version of Wordpress 2.3, you might consider upgrading sooner rather than later. Although there were no major security fixes, one of my most favorite updates in the latest release is the plugin update notification. What a great way to be notified of the latest security updates for plugins.

Right away, Wordpress 2.3 found I had a few plugins that had newer releases and even provided a link to the author’s download page. How nice! And this newer version also promises to be a much speedier version. Double nice!

There have been a few reports that the latest version may break some older plugins. So be sure to double check plugin compatibility before performing the update.

Download 2.3 now.

  1. It’s really nice to be able to see which of the plugins need an update… On the negative side, I’m not too comfortable with the switch from technorati to google’s blogsearch for the incoming links. Maybe it’s better but for sure is not as fast to see who is linking to you.

  2. Yes, there have been a few changes under the hood as well. I am definitely willing to take a few changes in return for a quicker loading / more secure blog. Let’s hope it all works out!

  3. Another trick I recently ran across is to ensure that you aren’t telling people what plugins you’re using… take a look at yoursite.com/wp-content/plugins/ to see what I mean. It can be locked down by simply placing an index.html file in there – or by your Cpanel’s “index manager”

  4. Hi Ben,

Glad my Index Manager suggestion over at Vlad’s blog helped. Thanks for sharing the tip here and continue enjoying your plugins!

  5. Ouch! I didn’t even realize that it was your suggestion! (That’s what I get for not paying attention to who’s saying what!)

It did indeed help – much thanks for the idea.
